OpenID

December 14th, 2008

OpenID is a relatively new development that uses a single URL to identify yourself at many sites. This URL is used instead of having many accounts, each with user names and passwords. The URL refers to a site on the web where you can store certain information about yourself–information that other sites typically require to match you with your account.

Here’s a video that might help explain how OpenID works, and why you might use it. This one is “OpenID according to Dave” (about 5 minutes long).

I’ve written a few posts (first one, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) in which I look at some of the companies and tools that support OpenID. The OpenID main site explains it in more depth and gives links to sites that support and use OpenIDs, as well as many service providers that offer them to you.

OpenID is a new and potentially powerful way of thinking about ourselves. First: we are in control of the information that’s listed at our OpenID site. Second, some of the OpenID tools will allow us to work with more than one identity. For example, we might have a work identity (with corresponding address, phone, email) and a home identity (different address, phone, email).

I will be exploring this and other identity management tools in posts to come. Meanwhile, I welcome your thoughts and feedback.
